El presente libro es un estudio sobre las críticas feministas a la ciencia, la tecnología y la epistemología.
Este es un libro sobre las ciencias, las tecnologías y las afirmaciones de conocimiento occidentales desde perspectivas feministas, y en los últimos capítulos comienza a tratar sobre enfoques apropiados en tales temas desde la perspectiva de los “feminismos globales” -feminismos capaces de hablar a partir de preocupaciones históricas particulares distintas de las occidentales locales que continúan distorsionando gran parte de la vida intelectual occidental.
El Capítulo I, “Después de la cuestión científica en el feminismo”, explora el contexto histórico dentro del cual ocurre el pensamiento feminista contemporáneo sobre la ciencia y el conocimiento, e identifica cinco cuestiones que se examinan en los siguientes capítulos; El capítulo inicial de la Parte I, “El feminismo se enfrenta a las ciencias: reforma y transformación”, examina los principales temas de la literatura científica feminista en este momento y sugiere la relevancia de estas críticas para las preocupaciones intelectuales y políticas contemporáneas.
Las feministas se planteaban "la cuestión de la mujer" en la ciencia: "¿Qué quieren las mujeres de las ciencias y sus tecnologías?" Pero también se planteaban "la cuestión de la ciencia en el feminismo": “¿Es posible utilizar con fines liberadores ciencias que aparentemente están tan íntimamente involucradas en proyectos occidentales, burgueses y masculinos?” Un tema de ese libro fue la importancia de las tensiones entre tres programas epistemológicos: la filosofía empirista feminista, que intenta la “mala ciencia” correcta; la teoría feminista del punto de vista, que intenta construir conocimiento desde la perspectiva de las vidas de las mujeres; y el posmodernismo feminista, que sospecha de las lealtades ilustradas inherentes a tales proyectos científicos y epistemológicos.
En consecuencia, las críticas feministas no son voces aisladas que claman en el desierto (si es que alguna vez lo fueron) sino que están vinculadas temática e históricamente a una marea creciente de análisis crítico de la vida mental y las relaciones sociales de la sociedad moderna, androcéntrica y Occidente imperial y burgués, incluidas sus ciencias y nociones de conocimiento.
